Fables

Winner of 14 Eisner Awards

When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society-within an exclusive luxury apartment building on Manhattan's Upper West Side-called Fabletown. But when Snow White's party-girl sister, Rose Red, is apparently murdered, it is up to Bigby, Fabletown's sheriff, and a reformed and pardoned Big Bad Wolf, to determine if the culprit is Bluebeard, Rose's ex-lover and notorious wife killer, or Jack, her current live-in boyfriend and former beanstalk-climber.

Fables

Why Read It?

Fables, with a 13-year print run and its 14 Eisner Awards, is one of the most successful graphic novel series ever written. It has spawned a number of spin-offs, a video game, and development for a film is underway. It appears at the top of most reading lists, and very few non-superhero graphic novels have inspired such a fervent fanbase as has the Fables series.

It is a product of its time, so the artwork changes rather dramatically throughout its publication run and it can be easy to spot how events of the day (such as 9/11) influenced Willingam's writing. But the characters from our childhood stories and fables have proven to be timeless and there's no shortage of ways to make them relevant today. While designed with a more mature audience in mind, older teens can also find much to appreciate in Bill Willingham's Fables series.
