Why Read It?
What Did You Eat Yesterday has received particular praise for the manner in which it depicts the fairly ordinary lives of a homosexual couple, Kakei and Kenji. Kakei is a straight-laced lawyer who enjoys his daily routines, but cannot come out to his co-workers over fear of losing respect from his more traditional-minded colleagues. Kenj, on the other hand, is a somewhat impulsive hairdresser who is very open to his colleagues about his sexual orientation. Their contrasting styles work well with each other, and they otherwise have the same kinds of relationship issues that more traditional couples have. The presence of food is prevalent throughout the series, and is cleverly used to highlight the bond between the two men and serves as a discussion piece for them.
