What’s So Great About Libraries?

Maybe the better question is, what’s not great about libraries?

October marks Canadian Library Month, but this isn’t just a celebration of buildings filled with books. It’s a recognition of the role that libraries play in the community.

At its heart, a library has books - lots of them, but it’s the power of literature that truly moves us as a community.  Whether you read for pleasure, education or to satisfy a curious mind, the worlds and doors that open to those that love to read are limitless.

Over the years, libraries have been shaped by the communities they serve.  You don’t need to buy anything, believe anything, or belong to anything to walk through the doors. You’re welcome simply because you exist. In a world increasingly led by algorithms, subscriptions, and social media, the library remains a safe and accepting space for everyone.

To be an inclusive space that caters to diverse populations, today’s libraries lend more than books, they’ve become places of opportunity, resources, and connection.

Take the SDG Library, in addition to our traditional library, our digital library accommodates those that love 24/7 access and are constantly on the move.  Whether it’s listening to audiobooks during the morning commute, reading eBooks while traveling light, watching movies and shows during breaks, or learning a new skill at your own pace, our digital library offers variety and convenience.

For those wanting to try some tech, we have iPads, Kobo readers, Wi-Fi hotspots and gaming consoles. These resources help bridge the digital divide and support users who may want to try before they buy.

Beyond the materials, we host nearly a hundred community programs each season that quietly transform lives.  Newcomers find belonging through book clubs and craft circles.  Aspiring writers find support in fellow writers and children find their creativity in maker spaces and gaming nights.

This only scratches the surface of all the amazing things the SDG Library offers. But perhaps most importantly, all of these things are offered freely with a library card. So why not use it? Walk in. Ask questions. Borrow something unexpected. Join a group. Meet some wonderful librarians who love their community, and enjoy!
