Vinyl Cutting
Create, cut and customise! Whether you're designing custom decals, personalizing gifts, or adding a professional touch to your projects, our vinyl cutter is the perfect tool to bring your ideas to life.
A vinyl cutter, also known as a craft cutter, is a machine used to cut precise designs from vinyl and other craft materials. After cutting, users “weed” the design by removing unwanted parts of the vinyl. These custom-cut pieces can be applied to hard surfaces (e.g., laptops, cars, walls) or fabrics (e.g., t-shirts, tote bags) using a heat press.
Vinyl cutting is ideal for customised gifts, promotional items, or creative personal projects.
The MakerLab offers vinyl cutting using the Cricut Maker 3, which can handle over 300 material types and is compatible with Cricut Design Space software. Patrons can create their own designs or use pre-made templates within the app.

Full-service vinyl cutting is only available at the MakerLab. The vinyl cutters cannot be shipped to other SDG Library Branches.

Most picture formats brought in on a USB stick are acceptable, including JPEGs, PNGs and SVGs. It is most important to have a good quality image that meets the design requirements for a vinyl cut. If the image is small or blurry it will result in a rough edge which is difficult to cut and weed. All designs will be uploaded into the Cricut Design space software for cutting. Uploaded material will be deleted once the project is completed. Alternatively, patron can create their own free Cricut Design Space account.
Designs can also be created within Cricut Design Space using the SDG Library’s Cricut Design Space subscribed account when at the MakerLab. Patrons who wish to use their own Design Space account are welcome to do that as well.

When you're using the Cricut Maker, the MakerLab offers vinyl and paper for purchase, but you can also bring in your own:
- Vinyl
- Cardstock
- Paper
- Fabric
Please bring in materials with their original packaging wherever possible and check with staff that the material is suitable before starting your project.

Vinyl cutters need simple silhouette type designs that have minimal colours. Lettering should be large and have thick lines. Vinyl cutters can’t make a decal out of a regular full colour photograph. If you wish to put a photograph on something our sublimation printer might be a better piece of equipment for your project.
