Celebrating Earth Day

Why do we celebrate earth Day?

Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 and began in 1970. It was founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson after a major oil spill in California inspired him to push for environmental awareness. Today, Earth Day is recognized by over 190 countries.  The focus was to raise awareness on environmental issues, like pollution and deforestation, evolving to include the importance of clean air, clean water and global warming.  There are many ways that both children and adults can help to do their part to protect and preserve our planet.

Earth Day encourages people to take part in:

  • Community cleanups
  • Tree planting
  • Recycling efforts
  • Conservation projects
  • Climate change education

The following is a compilation of activities and programs happening locally in the SDG Counties:

Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) – Tree Giveaway

  • Description: Free native tree and seedling distribution to support reforestation and biodiversity across Cornwall and SDG Counties.
  • Impact: Nearly 65,000 trees distributed locally since 2000.

Even small actions can make a big difference! Here are some fun ideas you can try:

Pick up litter in a park, schoolyard, trail, or neighborhood. Kids can help sort recyclables vs. garbage.
  • Nature Scavenger Hunt
Look for leaves, bugs, birds, rocks, clouds, or signs of spring.
  • Nature Walk or Hike
Take a slow walk and talk about animals, plants, and how nature changes through the seasons.
