Dandelions – Yay or Nay?

When reading the title of this post did you immediately have your response ready? If you’re a bee, butterfly, goldfinch, sparrow, or rabbit I can hear your “yays” from here, but what about our human readers. These hardy plants have a long history with humans as a food and medicine source and are also praised for their beauty by many. Despite the resilience and importance of dandelions however, there are many who will read this title that say “nay.” Those that like their lawn green and evenly cut or for their favourite wine to come from grapes rather than flowers.

Whatever your personal preference, dandelions can teach us a thing or two about growing strong and standing tall, no matter what anyone else thinks. These resilient and brilliant blooms have managed to stretch across every continent of the globe (excluding Antarctica,) and seem to pop up in some of the strangest places. And while I prefer those places weren’t along the foundation of my house, or the garden that I only just weeded and planted, I welcome the buzzing sounds of bees and the small bouquets of yellow that my own little, or visiting classes of children, bring me to brighten my day.

Though we might all have our differing views on dandelions, there may be much you hadn’t considered about these useful little plants when originally staking your claim of “yay” or “nay.” There’s plenty to create and explore with these plants, and we have the resources to connect you to that knowledge. Have a look and see what dandelions and other gifts from nature can do for you:
