Did you know you can suggest a book for the SDG Library to purchase? I was pleasantly surprised when a title I recommended - An Emotional Dictionary - was added to the library’s collection in 2023!
This book is written by Susie Dent, who you may know from the British comedy gameshow Countdown. It is a dictionary of words from all over the world that define specific emotional states. While I am not one to read a dictionary in its entirety (yawn), I enjoy flipping through the pages to find interesting and clever words to describe emotions. Every year I check out this book to explore it further. An Emotional Dictionary
Here are some examples of the words I have discovered:
"twithought" meaning a thought that disappears almost the moment you focus on it (a regular occurrence in my world!)
"basorexia" meaning a sudden desire to kiss someone (NOT a regular occurrence in my world) and
"gwenders" meaning a painful tingling from the cold (yup, I feel this one every January).
Even just flipping through the Index at the back is fun. It references "Italian words" for example, or words related to a wide range of people like "Patsy Cline" and "Franz Kafka." I noticed "kingfishers" referenced and wondered what word was related to one of my favourite birds. It is the word "halcyon" which means idyllically happy and peaceful. It originates from the Greek myth of the lovers Alcyone and Ceyx who were turned into kingfishers by Zeus. Kingfishers were said to mate during the fair and peaceful days surrounding the winter solstice known as the halcyon days. Later halcyon came to embrace any time of quiet, unruffled happiness.
So, if you are a word-lover check out "The Emotional Dictionary" or any of these other titles dealing with human emotions. https://sdglibrary.bibliocommons.com/v2/list/display/1600823809/2792074007
And don't be "cobblywobbly" about suggesting a purchase to SDG Library. You may just be "blutterbunged." Check out our Suggest a Purchase FAQs here https://www.sdglibrary.ca/faq/suggest-a-purchase/
