The SDG Library is pleased to announce the launch of its new sensory kits. Sensory kits are a collection of tools and materials designed to help people regulate their sensory experiences. They are often used by individuals who may become overwhelmed by sights, sounds, textures, smells, or other sensory input.

Sensory kits exist to:
- Support self-regulation by helping individuals manage their emotions and sensory needs.
- Reduce stress and anxiety in overwhelming environments.
- Improve focus and attention by providing appropriate sensory input.
- Increase comfort and inclusion in public spaces, schools, libraries, airports, events, and workplaces.
- Prevent sensory overload, which can lead to distress, frustration, or difficulty participating in activities.
Created to support individuals with sensory processing differences, autism, ADHD, anxiety, and a range of other needs, the kits provide practical tools to help users feel more comfortable and engaged in their daily lives.
Although sensory supports are often associated with people on the autism spectrum or those with sensory processing differences, these kits can benefit anyone. From a child who needs help concentrating on homework, to a teenager coping with anxiety, or an adult seeking ways to unwind after a busy day, sensory tools can offer valuable support in a variety of situations.
“Sensory needs vary from person to person, and we are excited to offer a resource that promotes inclusion and accessibility” said Emily Andrews, Community Librarian at the SDG Library. “These kits reflect our commitment to ensuring that Library services are welcoming and responsive to the diverse needs of the people we serve.”
The addition of sensory kits is part of the SDG Library’s ongoing commitment to make its services more accessible and inclusive for everyone. By offering resources that support emotional regulation, focus, and overall well-being, the Library aims to reduce barriers and help community members feel supported.
The sensory kits are now available to borrow free of charge with a valid SDG Library card. For more information, visit the Library of Things page on our website or speak with Library staff.
The SDG Library also offers a vast collection of fiction and nonfiction titles that support neurodivergent individuals and those around them.

Please note that this list includes titles for both adults and children.
This booklist feature autistic characters and/or authors and highlights authentic, engaging narratives that reflect a wide range of experiences, identities, and perspectives. Through heartfelt journeys, challenges, and triumphs, these novels offer representation, foster empathy, and celebrate the strengths and individuality of neurodivergent teens.
Many people experience the world through their senses in unique ways—some may feel overwhelmed and need strategies to settle, while others may seek additional sensory input to feel regulated. Although sensory processing differences are often associated with autism, they occur across a wide range of neurotypes. Everyone has sensory needs, and for some, these needs are more pronounced. The picture books in this list can help children better understand and navigate these experiences by providing relatable stories, calming language, and engaging visuals. They model coping strategies, build empathy, and offer reassurance that sensory differences are normal. Paired with the SDG Library’s Sensory Kits, these books can support children and caregivers in exploring tools and techniques that promote comfort, confidence, and self-regulation.
