SDG Library Expands Library of Things with New Memory Kits

Supporting Brain Health and Cognitive Well‑Being

Cognitive decline affects memory, communication, and daily functioning, and its impact continues to grow across Canada. The Alzheimer Society of Canada estimates that more than 1.7 million Canadians could be living with dementia by 2050.1 Yet there is also encouraging evidence: a 2020 Lancet Commission report found that up to 40% of dementia cases worldwide may be preventable through changes in lifestyle and environment. The report identifies twelve (12) modifiable risk factors, from physical activity to protecting your heart, that can support long‑term brain health. 2

Two of these factors; staying socially active and challenging the brain are directly supported by the SDG Library’s newest addition to the Library of Things: Memory Kits designed for individuals living with cognitive decline.  Introducing, three (3) themed kits; Birds, Cars, and Farms, each built around familiar imagery and hands‑on activities that encourage recognition, conversation, and enjoyment. Research from the Alzheimer Society highlights that familiar themes, sensory stimulation, and low‑pressure engagement can help reduce anxiety, activate memories, and strengthen connections between individuals and caregivers.

The kits align with the Lancet Commission’s recommended brain‑healthy behaviours:

Risk Factor #3: Stay socially active. Shared puzzles, picture books, and conversation prompts encourage interaction between users, caregivers, and family members.

Risk Factor #5: Challenge your thinking. Gentle problem‑solving, visual recognition, and hands‑on tasks help stimulate cognitive pathways in a low‑stress environment.

Each Memory Kit includes a selection of tactile, visual, and cognitive tools such as; paint sets, themed puzzles, a picture book, and sensory items like fidget aids. These materials support memory stimulation, fine motor skills, relaxation, and sensory comfort. Activities can be adapted to any ability level and used one‑on‑one, in small groups, or independently with supervision.

To further support caregivers and families, each kit includes best practices for communicating with people experiencing cognitive decline, along with a curated nonfiction reading list offering insight, guidance, and reassurance for those supporting someone living with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

The Memory Kits are now available to borrow through the Library of Things collection. To explore the kits or place one on hold, visit the Library of Things page on our website.
